The importance of our clothing style and its impact on our relationships

Whether we realise it or not, every morning we create a look that embodies our style of dress. In this article, we will see how important it is to maintain your style.

"Style is very personal. It has nothing to do with fashion. Fashion is over quickly. Style is forever." - Ralph Lauren

A style of dress is not only the way you dress on a day-to-day basis, it is above all the way you present yourself to your direct or indirect entourage. Here's why:

REFLECTS OUR PERSONALITY

Our look will be an expression of our emotional state. Unconsciously, we will often choose our clothes according to our mood of the day. The colours of these clothes will have a major impact on our decision. Quite often, when a person gets up on the wrong side of the bed, he or she will tend to wear dull colours. On the other hand, if that same person gets up in a good mood, he or she will wear brighter colours.

Similarly, wearing a particular look will affect your emotional state.

If you are aware that each garment and colour has its own properties, then you can use them wisely and thus encourage your subconscious to change your mood.

We all had that moment when we were wearing an almost perfect outfit! Right size, perfect fit, the colours we chose made us smile more. Just by wearing this outfit, we felt more confident and comfortable interacting with strangers.

THE IMPACT OF OUR STYLE

We often hear the saying, "clothes don't make the man". This saying exists precisely because we constantly make snap judgements about the people we meet. We also tend to have preconceived ideas about the average person based on the way they talk, move, and dress.

It only takes a few seconds for a person to make judgements about another person and these judgements go far beyond how you are dressed and how well you look.

A study was carried out in the UK with over 300 people, they looked at images of a man for just three seconds before making 'snap judgements' about them. In some pictures, the man was wearing a tailored suit. In others, he was wearing a completely similar model. The differences in the suits were very minor - only the colour, fabric and cut were different. All this while ensuring that the model's face was pixelated so that there could be no hidden messages in the facial expressions.

After only three seconds of exposure, people judged the man more favourably in the tailored suit. And the judgments were not about how well he was dressed.

They rated him as more confident, more successful, more flexible and with a higher income in a tailored suit than when he was wearing the alternative. As the model's face in the photos was obscured, these impressions must have been formed after a quick look at what he was wearing.(source: The influence of clothing on first impressions)
